A Brief Lexicon of Family Law
Decision-making Responsibility and Parenting Time:  These terms have now replaced what was once referred to as custody and access. The terms stem from the recent changes to the Divorce Act, which place the best interests of the child at the centre of any court decision regarding the family unit. Contact us to learn more.
Child Support and Spousal Support: Sometimes referred to as alimony, child support is a legal obligation of parents. It is based on the parents’ income and the number of children involved. Child Support may be required in cases of co-parenting (or shared decision making). Spousal support, on the other hand, is not always a legal obligation and depends on a variety of factors. Consulting a lawyer is recommended to understand your rights and responsibilities in cases of separation or divorce.
Marriage Contracts:  Sometimes referred to as a prenup or prenuptial agreement, a marriage contract can be established before a marriage or cohabitation. The agreement outlines how assets and debts are to be divided if the relationship ends. Call our office to discuss marriage and cohabitation contracts.
